Interpretive signs installed at Le Vieux Village
Newly installed interpretive signage at the Old Village in Opelousas will allow visitors to learn more about the history of St. Landry Parish Rural. Thirteen interpretive signs have recently been installed in rural historical attraction that includes one of the oldest Creole homes west of the Mississippi like a school of early 20th century, the office of a physician of the 19th century and the general store and the new Louisiana Orphan Train Museum. The signs were made possible through a grant program of Louisiana Certified Local Government and funded in part with federal funds from the National Park Service, Department of the Interior by the Bureau of Louisiana Culture, Recreation and Tourism, Cultural Development, Division of Historic Preservation.
The project is part of an effort to both preserve and promote the historic district Opelousas and the history of the city for visitors and residents. Historic District Commission hopes that the signs will help bring a strong identity and recognition for historic districts.Other projects in recent years included the installation of toppers Historic District street sign, creating a new historic tour brochure, the designation as a community of Opelousas Preserve America and the awarding of a Preserve America grant. A month ago the official state historical marker for the residence of Jim Bowie was re-installed near Chase Bank on Highway 182 in Opelousas.
The Old Village is located just off Interstate 49 to 828 St. E. Landry in Opelousas. Tours, which are provided free to the public, can be scheduled by calling 337-948-6263.
The City of Opelousas is the third oldest city in Louisiana. As far back as 1690, French merchants carried on trade with the Indians Opelousas. In 1720, the French territory of the Opelousas Post was established. This would bring a wave of nationalities in the region.
