So much for the Spitzer experiment

“A noble experiment” is what some deeply deluded people used to call Prohibition.

Others more rationally pointed out that in its capacity to turn ordinary, law-abiding American citizens into routine lawbreakers, it was the stupidest and most injurious law ever passed in this country.

In something of the same spirit, think of Eliot Spitzer on CNN as “a noble experiment.”

And one that’s over, as of this week, when CNN bounced him off his 8 p.m. show “In the Arena” and Spitzer signed off by reading the belligerent quote from Theodore Roosevelt that gave his show its title—and that working pols just love to pieces. (It says, in essence, that combative pols with their dukes up are always better than their effete, four-eyed critics.)

I must say that, in theory, I was very much in favor of the disgraced, whoremongering ex-governor having his own 8 p.m. show on CNN, where that nightly time slot has long been a graveyard.

While CNN had been sitting there for years trying to act responsibly in 08 hours, all the news channels less scrupulous about her were clean ratings wise (relatively speaking) - "Bill Bombastic "O'Reilly on Fox, Keith Olbermann on MSNBC, even Nancy Grace Prosecutor harridan act on News from CNN's sister network overall.

So why not, in desperation, try a fast-talking, fast-thinking former prosecutor and the governor of reform with a zipper capricious?At a time when reflex of self-justice has turned into one of the besetting sins of the "old media" journalism, it was almost a good idea to put a viable option, card transport in the sinner window.

If Spitzer was only one tenth as interesting as his sins.

I still think the idea, as bizarre as it was, had nothing but the strength behind it.

Unfortunately, this idea was attached to a man named Eliot Spitzer. And the man named Eliot Spitzer could say the skin of a peach off a snail and bore suicide in the bath nearest you.
