Vern Reese 1948-2011
Funeral service for Vern Reese was Saturday, July 2, at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg. The Rev. Michael Shaffer officiated. Burial was in the West Bend Cemetery at West Bend.
Vern was born Jan. 12, 1948 in Emmetsburg, the oldest son of Floyd Howard Reese and Mary Miller Reese. He attended schools in Emmetsburg and Fort Dodge moving to Florida in 1964. They settled for a short time in St. Augustine and then moved to a small farm in the Ocala, FL area. Vern loved to trap raccoons and catch fish, frogs, alligators, snakes, and turtles.
He performed many farm labor jobs and later got into construction work.
Although Vern had a learning disability and limited education he lived independently most of his life. When he was younger he was frugal with his money and saved enough to buy a new pickup truck.
In later years when his health prohibited him from working regularly be would search for things that were lost along the highway and other areas and then sell or give away bags of tools and other things he had found.
In 2007 he decided he wanted to move back to Emmetsburg to get away from the summer heat in Florida. However, his health started deteriorating, which required him to move into an assisted living facility. For approximately the last year he lived in the Lakeside Lutheran Home.
Vern was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his two sisters, Mrs. Cindy Featherston and Mrs. Julie Dillman of Ocala and by his brother, Larry Reese of Tallahassee, FL. He also has several nieces and nephews living in Florida, Texas, and California, as well as aunts, uncles, and cousins; many of whom still live in the Palo Alto County area.
He was buried in the West Bend Cemetery where he will be the fifth generation of Reeses to be buried there. His fifth great grandfather was the Rev. Johann Friederick Reis, a Lutheran Minister from Germany who came to America in 1749 and ministered in New York State for many years. He was also a descendant of Governor William Bradford who came over on the Mayflower and the Reeses were some of the early settlers in the Palo Alto County and neighboring areas.
