Creative Space: Play up the drama of the room
Q: The living room of our soon-to-be-completed new home has a challenging layout. The room is almost square and features an open concept design with the dining room off to one side.
The room also features two bay windows and a fireplace in the corner. We want to see the fireplace as a focal point but since it is in the corner, it is hard to arrange furniture around it.
We are a young couple with no children yet and we like to use this room to relax and occasionally entertain.
We would also like your opinion on whether to make the entry hall closet from floor to ceiling or just half-way up.
The room doesn’t have much wall space to hang pictures or place furniture, but we do want a sense of openness and are not sure if we should have a full closet.
A: The architectural style of your new living room will be dramatic, offering wide vistas both to the outside through the large bay windows and to the interior through the open concept that overlooks the dining room and hall areas.
The price you pay for this drama, however, is a lack of wall space which thwarts traditional furniture arrangements.
There are several reasons why I recommend that the closet in the entry hall be built all the way up to the ceiling line.
The first is simply that there is nothing to be gained by not doing so. A functional entry hall closet would be approximately 2.1- to 2.4-metres (7- to 8-feet) high and you would not be able to see over it into the living area in any event.
From the living room, all you would see would be a 1-metre (3-foot) gap between the ceiling and the top of the closet — neither an interesting architectural feature nor something that will enhance the open feeling of the space (but a good place to collect dust).
Another reason for maintaining a full-height closet is to enhance the dramatic impact of your open plan.
