Siding itself is not necessarily cheap but can be a solid investment for a home.
"Siding not only improves the curb appeal of your house, but it's also the main line of defense against weather and pests that might try to deteriorate your house," said Angie Hicks of Angie's List. "Letting it get out of hand and then not taking care of it can lead to problems down the road. A typical siding job you might invest about $10,000 to re-do your siding, but it depends on the material you choose and whether you hire it out."
On most siding projects, you should expect about an 80 percent return on investment. However, the projects return may not be realized right away, possibly for a few years.
By that, it's not the greatest investment for someone who will sell the house in the near future.
For houses with siding not looking its best, a thorough power washing or a coat of paint can help it look new again. However, in some instances it makes more sense to replace it.
"Take a look at your siding," said Hicks. "Go around your house and look for any signs of deterioration. If you have siding that's coming off in sections, that's looking worn are signs that you potentially want to invest in new siding and you have a lot of choices for types of siding whether it be vinyl siding, wood siding, even fiber cement are all popular choices."
Be warned, siding is not a simple weekend project.
While it can seem like an easy project, it is actually a lot harder. Ladders are necessary to remove sections of the siding.

"I grew up in a house that was built in 1875 from hardwoods that came from the property," said David Mills, a siding contractor. "Today, you really can't get wood of that quality. The only siding that I'll install today is fiber cement siding because of it's longevity, it's warrantied for 30 years for labor and material and then it's ability to hold paint, resist rot, and resist impact from things like hailstorms.
